If you are looking to move forward in a career in the film and television industry, this workshop series is your opportunity to learn first-hand from working, accomplished, Hollywood professionals what it takes to succeed and survive in this very difficult business. Built around a Master Class format, these workshops will offer one-on-one interaction opportunities between a small group of students and the presenting Master, with workshop topics ranging from a wide variety of interest areas within the industry. 

Individuals are welcome to attend as either a 'participant' or an 'auditor'. Participants will work directly with the presenting Master and will be provided all applicable materials as well as access to an intimate round table lunch on-site at the Road's End Films sound stage. Auditors will observe from a designated section (chairs are provided) and will not be permitted to ask questions or comment during the workshop, and will be on their own for lunch (an array of convenience foods are available within walking distance of the studio). Beverages will be available to everyone during the breaks.

“Audition Intensive”

Participants will be led by Frank through an intensive examination of the audition process:  how they need to prepare, what the Casting Director / Producer / Director is looking for, how to properly present yourself during the audition, the do's and don'ts of auditions, audition tape analysis and coaching, and a simulated callback to apply lessons learned. Students will be provided with sides prior to the event, and hand selected by Frank. 

Frank Collison is probably best known for his portrayal of Horance Bing on “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman”, but he has appeared in a number of feature films including “The Village”, “Hidalgo”, and “O Brother, Where Art Thou", each time presenting a quirky and most memorable character. He has also been in over 150 stage productions and is a founding member of Pacific Resident Theatre in Venice, California.

Pat Tallman
"The Business Side of Acting"

Participants will be encouraged to ask questions and interact with Pat during an in-depth lecture regarding what actors need to do to “package” themselves effectively in this age of social media and online interactions. Participants are encouraged to bring a digital portfolio of how they currently represent themselves for review, or utilize the lecture to develop their digital portfolio on-site with guidance from Pat. 

Pat Tallman is familiar to many for her acting (in George Romero’s remake of “Night of the Living Dead”, for example). But she also has an extensive background as a stunt double for actresses such as Laura Dern (in “Jurassic Park”) and Geena Davis (in “The Long Kiss Goodnight”). On top of that, for over 12 years she has counseled actors in how to market themselves, through her company Talent To Go.

Mary Jo Slater

Participants will be encouraged to ask questions and interact with Mary Jo during an in-depth lecture regarding what casting directors look for, what to expect at a casting call, how to present yourself, and how to properly prepare yourself prior to a casting call. Participants will also have the opportunity to run through a mock casting session under the direction of Mary Jo, after which she will provide her critique and feedback.

Mary Jo Slater has been Casting Director for over 30 years, and has many film and TV credits including the feature films "Spawn", "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective", "Super Nova", "The Last Castle", and "Star Trek IV". Television shows include  "Mistresses", "Perception", "Eureka", "Leverage" and "The Tudors". She is a member of the Casting Society of America. Fun fact: She also happens to be Christian Slater’s mom.

Mira Furlan
“How to Survive in TV and Film”

Participants will be encouraged to ask questions and interact with Mira during an in-depth lecture regarding the differences between acting on stage and acting in front of the camera, and additionally how to adapt and succeed in the acting world. Breakout sessions throughout the day will allow participants to, under Mira's guidance, practice the differences between stage and film acting using Mira's techniques.

Mira Furlan made a big name for herself on the Croatian stage prior to the Bosnian War of the early 1990s. At that time, she traveled to the United States and had to essentially start over to build her career. In Croatia she was a classical theater actor. When she came to the United States she successfully auditioned and was cast in "Babylon 5", and then later in primetime shows including "Lost". Additional credits include "Spider-Man", "NCIS", and "Law & Order".

Robin Atkin Downes

Participants will be led by Robin through the process of how to present yourself as a voiceover artist, with a focus on character development for animation, video games, and commercials. Participants will practice developing various voices, and will then record a voiceover demo tape with three or four different examples. Sessions will be recorded on our soundstage, with the actor in a portable recording baffle.

Robin Atkin Downes is a series regular on many popular shows including “Criminal Minds”, “NCIS”, and “Entourage”. He is also one of the most prolific voiceover artists in L.A., and has done voiceover for cartoon shows (“Thundercats”, “The Clone Wars”, among others), feature films (“How to Train Your Dragon”, “Green Lantern”, “The Tale of Desperaux”, among others), and his interactive credits are too numerous to list.

Under Claudia's direction, participants will perform a couple of short scenes from a contemporary drama and a contemporary comedy in front of the camera. Claudia will then playback and use that footage to point out the importance of being there for the other actors even when you’re not on camera, being fully engaged at all times, knowing where your light is, and tips on hair/wardrobe for taped auditions.

Claudia Christian's TV and film acting credits span the full range of comedy, drama, action, and animation voiceover. She is known to many for her long-running role in “Babylon 5” but she has also appeared on “Castle”, “Grimm”, “Nip/Tuck”, “NYPD Blue”, and Disney’s animated feature “Atlantis: The Lost Empire”. She is also a very successful video game voiceover talent, and can be heard in "Skyrim", "Guild Wars 2", "Halo", and "Darksiders II"
