MADRAS AUTHOR OPTIONS NOVEL FOR  MOTION PICTURE TO
ROAD ’S END FILMS
Madras, Oregon - April 12, 2010
Enes Smith, a Madras, Oregon, author has optioned his suspense novel, Cold River Rising, to independent producer Roads End Films in Newberg, Oregon. The film will be directed by Robert C. Bruce, whose credits include the award winning adventurous drama From Kilimanjaro with Love, and the adventure/suspense mini-series Forests of Mystery.

Can an Indian Reservation, using their status as a sovereign nation, use their sovereignty for something other than operating a casino? Could they actually declare war on a foreign country? While on Spring break from college, Native American Tara Eagle is kidnapped in a foreign land. She and her friends struggle for survival, first against terrorists, and then against the army. Her relatives become frustrated, and then angry at the slow response from the United States government. On the Cold River Indian Reservation of Oregon, her relatives do the unthinkable to rescue their children – they declare war on the nation of Peru. Joined by other tribal peoples across the country, they send in a rescue team to find the captured tribal students.

“My goal with Cold River Rising was to present Indian sovereignty in a dramatic way. The characters in Cold River Rising are a composite of Indian and non-Indian, thrown together in fearful and life-threatening situations. Cold River Rising, a story that blends old and new, a reservation under siege, is a modern day Dances with Wolves,” said Enes Smith.

Director Robert C. Bruce, also creative director of Road’s End Films, says of Smith’s novel, "Cold River Rising is a high adrenaline ride from start to finish. This exciting story includes all the elements of a great movie - characters you want to root for, fast paced action sequences, thoroughly evil bad guys, and a whole lot of heart. I am looking forward to directing this story and utilizing our own Oregon based Indian tribes as much as possible to do so." The Cold River Rising project is planned to go into production in late 2010 to early 2011.

About Author Enes Smith
Enes Smith relied upon his experience as a homicide detective to write his first novel, Fatal Flowers (Berkley, 1992).  Crime author Ann Rule wrote, “Fatal Flowers is a chillingly authentic look into the blackest depths of a psychopath’s fantasies. Not for the fainthearted . . . Smith is a cop who’s been there and a writer on his way straight up. Read this on a night when you don’t need to sleep; you won’t . . ." Fatal Flowers was followed by Dear Departed ( Berkley , 1994).  “You might want to lock the doors before starting this one,” author Ken Goddard wrote, “Enes Smith possesses a gut-level understanding of the word ‘evil,’ and it shows.” Ken Goddard is the author of The Alchemist, Prey, and Outer Perimeter, and Director of the National Wildlife Forensic Laboratory.

Smith’s work as a Tribal Police Chief for the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Indians of Oregon led to his first novel in Indian Country, Cold River Rising. The second novel in the Cold River series, Cold River Resurrection, was released in 2009. Smith worked as Interim police chief in 1994 and 1995, and returned as tribal police chief in 2005. He also worked for the Springfield and Eugene Police Departments. He has been a college instructor and adjunct professor, teaching a vast array of courses including Criminology, Sociology, Social Deviance, and Race, Class, and Ethnicity. He trains casino employees in the art of nonverbal cues to deception. He is a frequent keynote speaker at regional and national events, and has been a panelist at The Bouchercon, the World Mystery Convention.
