Upon a
blasted heath near Forres, three Witches, the "Weird
Sisters", meet the King of Scotland's generals, Macbeth and
Banqou, and hail Macbeth in a triple prophecy ending with the promise
of kingship. After King Duncan has made him Thane of Cawdor (as the
Witches promised), Macbeth knows that he and his unflinching wife are
ambitious for the greater honor. She drives him forward, and that
night he murders the sleeping king.
After
Macbeth is crowned king he remembers the Witches prophecies and has
Banqou killed. Haunted that night by Banqou's ghost he visits the
Witches the next day and learns to beware of Macduff, the Thane of
Fife. In insane paranoia, he has Macduff's family murdered. Meanwhile
Lady Macbeth, burdened by guilt, begins to sleepwalk and soon after
kills herself. At this point, word of Macbeth's actions have reached
Macduff, who vows revenge and marches toward the royal castle with the
army of Malcolm, the youngest son of the late King Duncan.
Macduff
and Macbeth meet in battle, where the Witches prophesy is again proved
true and Macbeth is slain. Macduff presents his head to Malcolm and
Malcolm is hailed the new King of Scotland.
