An adventurous drama

Story Synopsis

A young woman (Jenna Billings) finds a cache of letters written to her mother over the course of many years by a mysterious gentleman named Jerome. Against the advice of friends, Jenna searches out the only connection to Jerome that she can find, one Dallas Moore, an ex-roustabout and odd-jobber now living and working in the forgotten backcountry of Oregon. Dallas agrees to help Jenna, but the quest quickly turns dangerous when others with an interest in Jerome learn what Jenna is up to and head out to intercept her and convince her that the best way for her to preserve her health and happiness is to drop her interests and go home. When she doesn't listen to their advice either, things really heat up.

“From Kilimanjaro with Love”
An adventurous drama

Writer/Director Biography

Writer-director Robert C. Bruce has always had an appreciation of the zany and endearingly quirky qualities that often go unnoticed in people’s everyday public personalities. Coupling this with his keen sense of humor, inventive observation skills, and exceptional writing talent, he has found success as a published author of fiction and non-fiction, an advertising and publishing executive, a producer of film and TV segments, and a director of award-winning commercials. “From Kilimanjaro with Love” is his first full length dramatic feature film endeavor; he is currently hard at work on his next screenplay, the horror/thriller "Deadwater" set in the Oregon Wilderness.

Director’s Statement

I have always been fascinated by mankind’s ability to expend tremendous and sustained physical and emotional effort in the pursuit of what may be, in certain cases, a completely intangible goal. Certainly not everyone lives like that all the time – otherwise the mind boggles at how much more insanely crazy the world would be with every man, woman and child focused only on single-mindedly pursuing their own personal all-consuming goals, full speed ahead, no questions asked. At the same time we all seem capable of exhibiting such long-term devotion, either as individuals or as societies – and it doesn’t matter to us if most everyone else believes our obsession to be nonsense; if the required effort is beyond what most people would even consider reasonable; or – in some cases – if others around us are hurt, displaced, inconvenienced, o r put to ruin along the way. You want proof? Look at any war throughout history – everyone involved loses something, frequently nobody really wins, and almost always a lot of innocent bystanders get swept up in the whole unpleasant mess.

In a nutshell, that’s the concept behind “From Kilimanjaro with Love” – a group of people with various personal priorities and agendas, all relentlessly pursuing what they believe way beyond the point where anybody else would have said “This is getting me nowhere. I give up.”. In the world of “Kilimanjaro” loyalty is the most important core value, people take everything personally, you never go back on a promise, and nobody is a villain in their own eyes. In the end – as in life – who’s a winner and who’s a loser depends mostly on your viewpoint, and life goes on.

A film with roots in Yamhill County
By David Sale, NEWBERG GRAPHIC

PORTLAND — On October 13, 2007 a crowd of actors, crew members, and their friends and families gathered for a private screening of the independent movie “From Kilimanjaro with Love”, a project that had taken a little under year to complete. Pre-production work for “Kilimanjaro” began in January of 2007, followed by a three-week shooting schedule this spring in rural Yamhill County. Postproduction and editing of the footage concluded in September.

The result marks the first completed feature film project from Road’s End Films and a milestone for its members: writer-director Robert Bruce, his wife and producer/music supervisor Valerie Bruce, and their daughter and unit production manager/film editor Carey Bruce .

“It’s really kind of a family reunion,” Robert Bruce said prior to starting the show. “This is only the second time that all the cast and crew have been in the same room — we haven’t all come together like this since the first script read -through back in March of this year.”

The six -month turnaround from raw footage to finished movie was “standard,” said Robert Bruce, a veteran of the television commercial industry. “We didn’t have a huge staff, but still managed to stick to schedule that is pretty industry standard.” Carey Bruce added

“It was a lot of work,” Valerie added. “We worked closely with local composer Dave Deason (a retired music professor) on the original soundtrack for the film.” Like most films, the actors’ dialogue is recorded on set, but incidental noises — everything from ice cubes clinking in a glass to the thump of a hero punching a villain — is added during post production as what is known as foley effects. And more than a few punches are thrown in “Kilimanjaro,” a fun, adventurous drama in which a young woman travels to rural Oregon in search of a mysterious inheritance, trailed by a shady businessman and his gang of thugs.

“From Kilimanjaro with Love” offers laughs and thrills, as well as touches normally found only in big -budget films — courtesy of Newberg’s Precision Helicopter Services and Scio -based pyro-technician Kai Shelton. “He did ‘Pirates of the Caribbean , ’” Robert Bruce said. “There’s a lot of talent around here — most of the people involved are from the Portland area, which is why we held the screening here. It’s really for their benefit.” Indeed, seeing the results of their effort was quite an experience for those involved — especially actress Lindsay Klein , who played the film’s heroine.

“It was kind of scary — I hadn’t seen any of the footage before, so it was a surprise,” she said of watching herself on the silver screen. “Until now, I’ve mostly worked in theater, so this was my first real experience of movie -making.” On the whole, Klein added: “I’d love to do something like this again. It was a wonderful experience, and a great bunch of people to work with."

Road’s End Films is currently in development on their next feature length project.

“From Kilimanjaro with Love” – private premiere
By Abby Sewell, MOLALLA PIONEER

On Saturday I went to the premiere of “From Kilimanjaro with Love”, an independent Oregon-made film in which I happened to be an extra. I play (un-credited) “Girl with notepad in a museum” along with a bunch of people from Colton, Oregon. I won’t spoil it other than to say that it’s an action/adventure production with vague overtones of David Lynch (there’s a crazy old lady with an eye patch). It also features a tasteful naked-girl-tied-up-in-a-barn scene and a long but fun fight sequence, complete with some things exploding. High art it is not, but I, at least, was amused. Go see it if it eventually gets released into theaters. It may be better if you have some beer.
